Designing for Sydney
Sydney’s roofs run from heritage tile to modern Colorbond, across two networks. The rules differ by address.
- Mixed roof stock. Heritage and post-war tile through to modern Colorbond.
- Lots of single-phase connections in the inner and middle-ring suburbs, which caps inverter and export options before design begins.
- Tile roofs take longer to install on than tin. On a tight tile roof, fewer higher-wattage panels are often the better choice.
- Heritage and conservation areas can carry additional planning constraints on street-visible arrays. We check the property’s planning controls before design rather than after.
- Two networks. You may be on either Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy. The distributor named on your bill, not your retailer, decides your export limit.

Yes — from 1 September 2026 the NSW PDRS includes a shared-battery activity (BESS3) for apartment buildings of four or more dwellings.
Metering arrangement determines who benefits, so strata projects start with the metering plan, not the hardware.
Do heritage or conservation areas restrict solar in Sydney?
They can constrain street-visible arrays or require additional approval, depending on the council and the specific controls on the property.
